Quick answer: A skincare routine for beginners needs only three steps: cleanse, moisturise and protect with sunscreen in the morning. At night, cleanse and moisturise. Use gentle products, add one new item at a time, and give each product four to six weeks before judging it. Extra steps are optional.

Why three steps are enough

Social media makes skincare look like a ten-step ritual. It does not need to be. Your skin already renews itself. Your job is to keep it clean, keep it comfortable and protect it from the sun. A short routine you follow every day does more than a long one you abandon after a fortnight.

Three steps also make it easier to spot problems. If your skin reacts, you know where to look.

The skincare routine for beginners, step by step

Step 1: Cleanse

Washing removes sweat, sunscreen, pollution and dust. In most Indian cities that last one matters. Use a mild cleanser with lukewarm water, morning and night. If your skin feels tight or squeaky afterwards, the cleanser is too harsh.

  • Oily skin: a gel or light foaming wash.
  • Dry skin: a cream or non-foaming wash.
  • If you wear makeup or heavy sunscreen: a cleansing balm or oil first at night, then your usual wash.

Step 2: Moisturise

Every skin type needs moisture, including oily skin. A moisturiser helps the skin barrier hold water and feel comfortable. Apply it on slightly damp skin, straight after cleansing. Choose a gel or light lotion for humid weather and a cream for dry winters. If you need help choosing, read our guide on moisturiser for dry skin in winter.

Step 3: Sunscreen (morning)

This is the step beginners skip most, and the one that matters most for how skin looks over the years. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or above every morning, even on cloudy or monsoon days and even if you stay indoors near windows. Use about two finger-lengths for the face and neck. Reapply every two to three hours if you are outdoors.

A simple routine at a glance

Time Step What to use Time it takes
Morning 1. Cleanse Mild face wash, lukewarm water 1 minute
Morning 2. Moisturise Light lotion or gel 30 seconds
Morning 3. Protect Sunscreen, SPF 30 or above 1 minute
Night 1. Cleanse Same wash; balm first if wearing makeup 1 to 2 minutes
Night 2. Moisturise Same moisturiser or a richer one 30 seconds

Optional extras, once the basics are a habit

After a month of the three steps, you can add one extra at a time if you want to.

  • Toner or face mist: refreshes skin and leaves it damp for the next step. Rose water is a gentle option. See how to use rose water on your face.
  • Serum: a targeted step for things like dullness or uneven-looking tone. Niacinamide is a gentle starting point.
  • Exfoliant: once a week at most, and never on irritated skin.

Add serums between cleansing and moisturising. Lightest textures go first, heaviest last.

The India angle: weather, water and money

India has several climates in one year. In humid summers and monsoon, lighter gel textures feel better and sweat-resistant sunscreen helps. In dry North Indian winters, switch to a cream. If you spend the day in an air-conditioned office, your skin may be drier than the weather outside suggests.

Hard water in many cities can leave skin feeling tight. A gentle cleanser and prompt moisturising help. You do not need a large budget. A good three-step routine can cost Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,500 in total, and each product lasts one to three months.

How to choose your first products

  • Know your skin type. Wash your face and wait an hour. Shiny all over is oily, tight is dry, shiny only on the forehead and nose is combination.
  • Read the label, not the claim. Look for simple formulas and avoid heavy fragrance if your skin is sensitive.
  • Buy smaller sizes first. Travel sizes let you test without wasting money.
  • Change one thing at a time. Wait two weeks before adding the next product.
  • Be wary of big promises. No cosmetic changes your skin overnight.

Sticking with it

Keep your products next to your toothbrush. Pairing skincare with a habit you already have makes it far easier to remember, especially on tired nights.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a full routine on day one.
  • Skipping sunscreen because it is cloudy or you are indoors.
  • Scrubbing hard or exfoliating every day.
  • Sleeping in makeup.
  • Giving up on a product after a week.

Where our products fit

If you want to add a mist after cleansing, our Rooh-e-Gulab rose water (Rs. 379 for 100 ml, or Rs. 249 for a 50 ml travel size) is alcohol-free and made with steam-distilled rose petal extract. For step 2, our Collagen Moisturiser (Rs. 1,099) is light and non-greasy. The Hydration Duo (Rs. 897) brings both together. We do not make a cleanser or sunscreen, so pick ones you like from any brand.

Patch test and safety

Patch test every new product. Apply a little on your inner arm or behind your ear once a day for three days. Stop if you see redness, itching or swelling. Mild tingling that fades in seconds can be normal. Burning is not. If you have acne, pigmentation, eczema or rosacea, see a dermatologist before building a routine. They can tell you what will help and what to avoid.
